In-store Retail Media Network (RMN) has been one of the few bright spots in the AV market this year. This paper is a simple primer for end customers on some key factors to consider when selecting displays for RMN projects and digital signage in general.
Brightness
Most retail environments are well lit. For signage, 500 nits or higher is generally recommended. Consumer TVs are designed for home environments and are not necessarily suitable for commercial signage applications or long operating hours.
Haze
Haze is a screen treatment that reduces glare from lights and other reflections. It helps make content easier to read in bright environments. A haze level around 25% can provide a good balance between reducing reflections and maintaining image clarity. Higher haze can reduce reflections further, but may also make the image look grainy or less clear.
Orientation and Installation
Do you need both landscape and portrait orientation? If the display supports both (often with all four side bezels equal in width), it gives you more flexibility for future projects.
Some customers rotate a display and adjust the image at the source even when the display is not rated for portrait operation. This is not recommended. While the display may appear to function in the alternate orientation, operation is not guaranteed and can potentially shorten the display’s lifespan significantly.
Reliability and Service Life
Reliability is extremely important for RMN. A display that is down means lost advertising revenue, and an onsite service call can be expensive.
Consider these factors:
Operating hours: If your application runs 24/7, use a display rated for 24/7 operation. Even if your application does not run continuously, a 24/7-rated commercial display is designed for longer and more demanding operation. All other things being equal, a 24/7-rated display can be expected to have a longer service life than an 18/7-rated display. The higher rating can provide additional reliability and reduce the risk of early failure over the life of the project.
Environment: Dust and moisture can affect the life of a display. Depending on the location, you may need a specific IP rating. Full IP65 protection can add significant cost. In some applications, protecting the back of the display against water may provide a practical compromise.
Built-in or External Player
A display with a built-in player can reduce both equipment cost and installation cost. It also requires fewer cables and usually only one power connection.
With a separate player, the advantage is flexibility. The player can be replaced or upgraded without replacing the display. If a built-in player display has an HDMI input, an external player can also be added later if needed.
Signage OS
Common choices include Windows, Android and Linux-based signage platforms such as BrightSign OS.
Consider application support, performance, security, reliability and long-term support. Ask how often the OS is updated and what support is available. Can you call a local support team if there is a problem?
After selecting the display and OS, you also need to select the content management platform and measurement tools. For RMN, measurement is especially important because advertising pricing is often based on impressions and proof of view. These topics deserve separate articles.
MOKA DS60P
MOKA is part of the TCL group and one of the world’s largest contract manufacturers of LCD displays. MOKA has vertically integrated manufacturing capabilities, from LCD glass panel production through final display assembly. This gives MOKA strong control over product quality, product development and supply.
MOKA shipped more than 24 million displays in 2025 and has more than 10,000 employees worldwide, including more than 800 R&D engineers.
The MOKA DS60P is a commercial display with BrightSign built in. It is designed for 24/7 operation, with 500-nit brightness and BrightSign OS.
BrightSign OS is purpose-built for digital signage, providing a reliable and secure platform for RMN applications.
